Tequila Without the Makeup: Agave, Oak, and Time

National Tequila Day is a celebration of one of the world's most misunderstood spirits. Beyond the colorful bottles and celebrity endorsements lies a craft rooted in agriculture, fermentation, distillation, and patience.

Join spirits educator and author Jay Puckett for an exploration of tequila in its most authentic form. This guided tasting will feature four carefully selected additive-free tequilas that demonstrate how flavor develops naturally through agave, oak, and time.

Guests will experience:

  • Don Fulano Blanco – A traditionally crafted blanco that highlights the pure character of mature Blue Weber agave and the influence of thoughtful production decisions.

  • Wild Common Reposado – A refined reposado that showcases how restrained barrel aging can complement, rather than overshadow, agave character.

  • Tequila Ocho Añejo – An expressive añejo that balances rich maturation notes with a strong sense of place and terroir.

  • A Special 11-Year Extra Añejo Selection – A rare opportunity to explore how extended aging can transform tequila while maintaining balance and elegance.

Along the way, we'll explore the production decisions that shape flavor, including agave sourcing, cooking methods, fermentation, distillation, and barrel maturation. The evening concludes with a surprise comparative pour that challenges common assumptions about sweetness, oak influence, and what many consumers expect tequila to taste like.

Whether you're new to tequila or a longtime enthusiast, this tasting will deepen your appreciation of how place, process, and patience create one of the world's most compelling spirits.

“Although originally from the hometown of Four Roses and Wild Turkey, my journey began in Colorado Springs during the microbrew boom of the ’90s. I enjoyed every new beer that showed up which then carried into my travels in the Air Force where I would try the local brews across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

It wasn’t until a decade later that I started to appreciate Bourbon, Scotch, Tequila, and more recently, Gin and Brandy. With a background in engineering and finance, I’m driven to learn about the how and why. I now use that passion to become more than just a drinker of spirits, but attempt to understand the history, artistry, and people that go into crafting each bottle.”
